EDUCATION DIRECTOR
Job Description
 
SAN ELIJO LAGOON CONSERVANCY (Conservancy) is a public-spirited, non-profit organization formed in 1987 with the mission to preserve, protect and enhance the natural resources of the San Elijo Lagoon Ecological Reserve and its watershed. Located in North County San Diego, the conservancy is governed by a volunteer board of directors which sets policy for the Executive Director and staff. The conservancy raises funds through membership dues, solicitation of private and corporate donations as well as public and private grants. Funds are used to support education programs and projects that directly benefit the health of the lagoon and its watershed or upgrade services available to visitors.
 
RESPONSIBILITIES: The primary responsibilities of the Education Director are the development and implementation of curriculum-based environmental education programs that meet state California Academic Content standards for K-12, as well as programs that support the general education and enrichment of our membership and the community at large. Activities will encompass curriculum development, educational materials development, grant writing as well as volunteer and docent management.
 
  • Curriculum / Program Development - K-12
    1. Write and implement an Education Vision Statement and Plan, complete with action plan, time lines, financial, marketing and human resource requirements, and assessment /evaluation components
    2. Create and implement grade-appropriate classroom and lagoon-based activities
    3. For each targeted grade level, write a curriculum-based lesson plan that includes hands on activities and experiential walks
    4. Create a teacher training program
    5. Initiate, cultivate and retain relationships with local teachers, public and private school administrators and school districts personnel
  • Curriculum / Program Development - Community
    1. Create and implement activities that support the environmental education and enrichment of our membership and the community at large.
    2. Create educational content and collaborate with SELC Outreach Coordinator and other staff to facilitate utilization of such material in outreach media, development materials, quarterly newsletters, website, publications, etc.
    3. Interface with the County Rangers and the County Nature Center
  • Grant Writing and Management
    1. Write and implement successful grants to support the education goals as outlined in the conservancy's strategic plan.
    2. Create budgets and financial plans for all education program related activities
    3. Exercise oversight and management of all subcontractors/consultants needed to fulfill education and grant writing project needs
  • Docent Program Management
    1. Recruit, support and retain volunteer docents
    2. Schedule and coordinate regular docent training workshops
    3. Create assessment tools to track individual docent performance
    4. Maintain master schedule of docents and scheduled walks
    5. Develop docent training program & supporting materials
    6. Host annual Docent and Volunteer Appreciation Event
    7. Collaborate with Outreach Coordinator to synchronize efforts
  • Administration & Reporting
    1. Track and evaluate the success and impact of the education program
    2. Serve as liaison to Board of Directors education committee
    3. Create annual budget for program
    4. Review, contribute to and update Education Program Strategic Plan
    5. Attend regular staff meetings
    6. Submit monthly staff report
    7. Other related duties as assigned
    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
    1. Bachelor's Degree in a related field (advanced degree preferred), plus 4 years experience of program development in Environmental Education, related fields include Education, Natural Science, Environmental Education, Biology, Environmental Studies or Outdoor Education
    2. Knowledge of local flora and fauna, estuarine ecology, environmental biology, & wetlands issues required
    3. Background in curriculum development and demonstrated ability to teach both children and adults necessary; previous classroom experience a plus
    4. General knowledge of California Academic Content Standards for K-12
    5. Clear, effective and demonstrable oral and written communication skills
    6. Strong interpersonal, problem solving, proofreading, customer service and relationship building abilities
    7. Must be comfortable engaging diverse groups of people and enjoy working outdoors.
    8. Strong organizational skills with the ability to handle multiple, high priority projects with keen attention to detail.
    9. Professional demeanor; team player orientation; ability to interface with internal and external parties at all levels
    10. Hands on self-starter, energetic and motivated.
    11. Proficiency in the following software or systems: MS Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Adobe Acrobat Reader Professional
    HOURS: Full-time. Must be available some evenings and weekends, as needed, to attend conservancy functions, community events, etc.
     
    COMPENSATION: The position of Education Director is a non-exempt position. San Elijo Lagoon Conservancy offers a competitive compensation package including salary, health benefits, paid vacation, paid holidays, and 403b retirement plan. Salary: $42,000 - $57,600 depending upon qualifications. Salary will be paid monthly in accordance with SELC employment policies.
     
    REPORTING STRUCTURE: This position reports to both SELC's Executive Director & Principal Scientist and Development Director
