Preserve & protect the San Elijo Lagoon Ecological Reserve

Thirty years ago, the natural beauty of the San Elijo Lagoon was marred by abandoned cars, dumped trash and poorly treated sewage. Highway construction had restricted the mouth of the lagoon, converting the tidal basin into a rancid, bug infested swamp. Plans were being made to drain the lagoon in order to build a housing development.
 
Thankfully, a group of local residents convinced San Diego County and the State of California to acquire the lagoon, and its degradation has halted.
 
In the years since, the San Elijo Lagoon Conservancy has continued to acquire watershed acreage for preservation, protection and enhancement. In 2001, the Conservancy acquired 33 acres along Escondido Creek. In 2004, the Conservancy purchased another 15 acres just north of the La Baja Bridge.
 
As North County becomes increasingly congested with people, cars, buildings and roads, the need to preserve our remaining natural open spaces grows ever more important. And, with the help of its dedicated membership and other generous supporters, the Conservancy was been there to protect and enhance the San Elijo Lagoon Ecological Reserve.

San Elijo Lagoon Conservancy is a public-spirited non-profit organization dedicated to preserving, protecting and enhancing the San Elijo Lagoon Ecological Reserve and its watershed. Formed in 1987 by concerned citizens, it continues to be governed by a volunteer board of directors. All contributions to SELC are tax-deductible to the full extent provided by law under its 501(c)(3) tax status, ID #33-0358660. It is the policy of the conservancy not to sell, trade or distribute our membership lists to other organizations or individuals.
