FIELD TRIP GUIDELINES AND TRAIL ETIQUETTE

Checklist for Field Trip:

  • Review these guidelines with your group.
  • Be sure to communicate these expectations with the adult chaperones.
  • Please create name tags for each student and chaperone, which are helpful to docents leading walks.
Prepare your group for the field trip
  • Divide students into even groups of 10 or fewer prior to visiting the lagoon.
  • Review the topics and subjects of interest for your class before your visit, and preview the educational video in Teachers' Place.
  • Use the bathroom before coming. There are restroom facilities only at the Nature Center.
  • Make sure your docent is aware of any allergies.
  • Notify the Conservancy in advance of any special needs.
Dress for the outdoors
  • Wear comfortable closed-toe walking shoes (no flip-flops).
  • Students are suggested to wear layered clothing to allow for changes in temperature.
  • Sunblock and a hat are highly recommended.
  • Name tags are required for all students and chaperones.
Arrange for chaperones to accompany your class
  • Please assign at least one adult chaperone for each group of 10, or fewer.
  • Allow the docent to lead the group by keeping ahead of the students.
  • Try to have one chaperone bring up the rear.
  • It is the responsibility of the teacher and/or adult chaperones for any disciplinary actions.
  • Please turn off all cell phones.
Stay on designated trails
  • For the safety of the children and the wildlife, please stay on designated trails.
  • Walk quietly along the trail to avoid disturbing wildlife and other hikers.
Leave only footprints, take away memories
  • All plants, animals and artifacts are protected in the reserve.
  • Do not pick any flowers or leaves.
  • Return any item you examined just where you found it.
  • Food is not allowed on trails, but water is highly recommended.
  • Carry out with you anything you brought in.
Arrival, Rain, or Cancellations
  • Please try to arrive 15 minutes early to assemble everyone to start on-time.
  • In the event of rain, contact Education Director Tara Fuad by email no later than 8 am on the day of the walk if you want to reschedule. We will not cancel the walk unless you choose to.
  • Should your group encounter major traffic delays or any other unforeseen complications, please contact Tara Fuad.
Note: We require at least one chaperone per group of 10 children. If you anticipate high chaperone interest in the field trip, please let us know in advance and we will organize a special walk for chaperones that exceed our school program needs. Thank you.
