Animal Guide :

The California Mouse used to be called the Parasitic Mouse for its tendency to make itself at home inside the houses of the Dusky-footed Woodrat. (The Desert Gray Shrew has also been known to build its nest in Woodrat houses.) It's possible that Woodrats tolerate the presence of these uninvited guests because they can help look out for dangerous intruders, such as snakes.
