Overview:

Identifying a male Gadwall is an accomplishment. Look for a gray duck with a contrasting black bill and rump. Though he isn't flashy in his breeding plumage, a good look through your binoculars will reveal his exquisite and intricate markings. The female has a lighter-colored bill, no black rump, and simpler markings on her body feathers.
