SUMMER 2009 DOCENTS OF THE QUARTER

JANINE FREE AND ELIZABETH VENRICK

Meet weekend nature walk wonders: Janine Free and Elizabeth Venrick. They have made an excellent team, working together nearly every Saturday since the opening of the Nature Center in January 2009. Their leadership and commitment led to our established Saturday walks, which are now covered by four rotating docents, allowing them to enjoy a few weekends "off."

L-R: Elizabeth Venrick and Janine Free

JANINE FREE
Janine retired from Qulacomm as a research librarian three years ago. Upon retiring, Janine filled her time giving back to the community by offering her professional skills to the City of Encinitas public library, and sharing her lifetime passion for nature with the Conservancy, the Encinitas community garden, and the County of San Diego.

“I’ve always been an avid hiker, and passionate about nature, so it’s wonderful now to be able to share my passion with others,” noted Janine. But her skills don’t stop there. A natural communicator and accomplished photographer, Janine helps represent and photograph the Conservancy at community events, seamlessly alternating among her many skills.

ELIZABETH VENRICK, PhD
Elizabeth is a research oceanographer at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, and continues to conduct research as an RTAD (returned to active duty), which is equivalent to Professor Emeritus. She is a current Conservancy board member, Cardiff resident, and native plant gardener with an undergraduate degree in botany, so becoming a docent at the lagoon was a natural fit.

She graduated from docent training in the spring of 2006, and now participates in the monthly bird walks, serves as a county volunteer at the desk at the Nature Center, leads the 4th Saturday walks at the Nature Center, and helps out at the 2nd Saturday walks at Rios Avenue.
