Summer 2011 Docents of the Quarter

As they approach their 50th wedding anniversary, Bob and Cindy Moore reflect on how they have been involved in protecting San Elijo Lagoon Ecological Reserve for nearly half of their married life.

From patrolling and picking up trash in the reserve, to creating and maintaining the Conservancy’s first donor database, constructing the Conservancy’s first outreach display, serving on the Board, participating in numerous outreach events, and being super docents, one wonders: Is there anything they haven’t done for the Conservancy?

Bob can often be seen with his scope, sharing his knowledge and love of the lagoon birds with others, while Cindy is a natural with the kids, making them laugh and bringing joy to their eyes with her lovely voice and endless supply of nature songs.

“I so very much enjoy being with kids....seeing their eyes light up, and witnessing them experience an “aha” moment in nature,” reflects Cindy. Bob adds, “I really enjoy sharing interesting facts and helping people look differently at the reserve...showing them something they might not have noticed on their own.”

One would think that with all the time they commit to the Conservancy, Bob and Cindy wouldn’t have time for much else. But they are both active with their church and family and continue to enjoy long-time hobbies. A retired engineer, Bob has built numerous cages for their dozens of pet finches and enjoys sailing in the San Diego Bay. Cindy, a former Girl Scouts employee, remains very active in the organization, volunteering her time to train new scout leaders. She is also active in the San Diego Children and Nature Collaborative and enjoys caring for and riding her horse, Lance.

Bob wraps up the interview as Cindy nods in agreement, “I find the docents of the Conservancy a truly remarkable group of people. They are one of the nicest and most cooperative groups I have ever worked with, and that in itself is a big reason for remaining involved.”

Thank you Bob and Cindy for sharing your many talents with the Conservancy, and for your years of dedicated service. You are role models to us all!
