Docent in the Spotlight Winter/Spring 2012

Docent Jan Wier may be known best for graciously hosting the annual Docent Graduation Potluck at her lovely home near the Rios Avenue trailhead in Solana Beach. Jan has been a long-time member and supporter of the Conservancy, and a docent since 2003.

“Learning the stories of the lagoon through the eyes of Barbara was a real honor, and a great way to connect to the land,” reflects Jan, referring to when docent training was conducted solely by renowned naturalist Barbara Moore, 2009 recipient of the Conservancy’s Lifetime Achievement Award. “But I have also enjoyed watching the education program grow since then, and have been inspired to lead more walks using the newly developed curriculum for teachers with specific guidelines for docents.”

We appreciate any time that Jan can spare to volunteer for the Conservancy because we share her time and talents with a number of other organizations. Jan volunteers at Mexican American Education Guidance Association, is a docent at Solana Beach Civic and Historical Society, tutors with Casa de Amistad, and serves on the board of Story Arts, Inc. In all her volunteer capacities, Jan has never veered far from her lifetime passion of working with kids.

Having spent the majority of her career as a reading specialist in the Vista Unified School District, she has dedicated countless hours to educating children. “Working with youth is always pleasurable and a great learning experience. San Elijo Lagoon Conservancy allows me to give back to the community in a meaningful way, and this is very important to me.”

During the rare moments when Jan is not giving back to the community, she enjoys golfing, reading, traveling, theater, and symphony. Thank you, Jan, for all you do for our community. We look forward to seeing you out on the trails!
