Cobwebby thistle

Spring wildflowers signal a change of season and sprinkle our hillsides with color.

Want to know more about local flora? Join plant ecologist Elizabeth Venrick, the author of our online plant guide for a six-part wildflower identification series.

Sessions alternate between classroom learning and field exploration. In the lab we will learn some simple tools for plant identification, and some fun clues for recognizing basic plant families. In the field we will practice our new skills on our native plants, and discover some of the characteristics that allow them to thrive in our local environment.

By the end of the series, you can recognize many of our spring plants and know not only their appearance, but also their unique personalities.
